Reptile Observatory

Squamata vertebrates (lizards and snakes), commonly referred to as reptiles, are top predators species in some ecosystems and have high patrimonial value since they are all protected

Studies in natural populations, particularly in France, have shown a non-homogeneous acceleration of rhythms of activity and reproduction in relation to recent global warming. For example, some lizards are now reproducing significantly earlier in the year, are active much longer during the seasons and for more hours during the day in certain populations due to warmer local conditions. In addition, some phenological events, in particular the date of reproduction and therefore birth dates of newborn cohorts, are driving life history traits such as body size, fecundity, dispersal and survival of individuals. The study of the proximate causes of phenology variation in relation to climatic variations, but also local conditions, represent therefore a major research challenge to understand and protect the biology of these animal France. These species are most often threatened especially by the destruction of their habitat and climate change. Reptiles as most ectotherms, are characterized by a biology that is very sensitive to climatic conditions. Their phenology, activity, performance, and life history traits are profoundly conditioned by daily fluctuations or seasonal temperatures, both during activity and at rest.

The Reptile Observatory sets its main objective as recording, understanding and modelling changes in phenology both within and between some species of lizards and snakes in metropolitan France in the context of the Environmental Research, Experimentation and Observation System TEMPO. It seeks to homogenize, centralize and make available phenology data currently distributed in heterogeneous information systems and its impact on individuals traits. The Observatory is also developing actions to promote the standardization of protocols and integration of data in demographic models.
